This course is the core training for teachers are completely new to Bug Club Phonics but have access to Bug Club Phonics on ActiveLearn Primary in their school, for example, teachers who have taken up a post in a school that uses Bug Club Phonics but missed any previous training that the school had. It is recommended that all teachers complete this training before they begin using Bug Club Phonics.

The Bug Club Phonics Approach – Part 1

To develop confidence and competence with Bug Club Phonics whole-class teaching materials, teachers will be introduced to the programme and its structure. Each aspect of the phoneme and language lesson will be explored and the rationale explained. Teachers will be introduced to the ActiveLearn Primary (ALP) platform and begin to explore the wealth of resources available.

The Bug Club Phonics Approach – Part 2

In the second part of the course, teachers will explore the planning resources, 100% decodable readers​ and consider how they will use these resources to meet the needs of their pupils. Finally, teachers will learn about the assessment resources and explore the approach to support children who need to keep up.

Throughout the course, teachers should have access to the ActiveLearn Primary platform so that they can navigate the resources for themselves.
