This 1-hour course is invaluable for any teacher who wants to encourage deeper understanding of mathematics in their classroom.

In this course, teachers will learn what ‘deepening understanding’ really means, and the activities that can be employed so that pupils deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. Teachers will also find out about the many different ‘deepening understanding’ activities and resources available to them in both the Power Maths books and throughout the Teacher Guide. And, of course, teachers will work at identifying those pupils who may benefit most from being offered opportunities for deepening understanding.

Having built their confidence, towards the end of the hour teachers will be encouraged to consider how they might incorporate their own ‘deepening understanding’ ideas into their teaching. Then, finally, there will be time to consider three key things to try in a lesson back in the classroom, encouraging teachers to recall and consolidate what they have learnt about deepening understanding during this session.
