Power Maths Core PD Individual Delegate Course
This 3-hour course is the core training for teachers who will be using Power Maths resources. It is for any teachers who are completely new to Power Maths but have access to the Power Maths product in school, for example, teachers who have taken up a post in a school that uses Power Maths but missed any previous training that the school had. It is recommended that all teachers complete this training before they begin using the product.
It is assumed that attendees have some understanding of a mastery approach to maths. A prerequisite of the course is that attendees already have access to their school’s Power Maths online account and are able to log in.
Part 1 – Introduction to Power Maths and The Power Maths Lesson
In this part of the course, teachers are introduced to the philosophy behind Power Maths (maths mastery and growth mindset). They will be shown the components of the product and look at the structure of a Power Maths year. Teachers will then be introduced to the structure of a Power Maths Unit and consider the Unit Starter. Teachers will be introduced to the ActiveLearn Primary platform (ALP) and learn how to log in. Next, teachers will begin to look at a Power Maths lesson, by considering the options for the start of the lesson. They will explore where to find the different parts of the lesson, and they will be shown where to access the relevant resources on the platform. Additionally, teachers will have an opportunity to observe part of a modelled lesson.
Part 2 – The Power Maths Lesson, Teaching Support, Assessment and Next Steps
In the second part of the course, teachers continue to learn about the structure of a Power Maths lesson. They will learn about the purpose of the different parts of the lesson and think about how they might use them in their classrooms. Additionally, they will look together at practice questions and reflect on what makes them intelligent practice.
Teachers will then explore the End of Unit activities available on the ActiveLearn Primary platform, looking at the End of Unit Checks in both the Teacher Book and Workbooks, and thinking about how they will run this in their classrooms. Additionally, they will be shown where to find the End of Unit deepening and strengthening activities. Teachers will then look at the teaching support available to them both in the Unit Videos and the Teacher Guide, and learn how to access these through the platform. Finally, teachers will spend some time thinking about formative and summative assessment and how Power Maths offers a wealth of opportunities for both as well as being shown some additional useful resources on Power Maths.
Throughout the course, teachers should have access to the ActiveLearn Primary platform so that they can navigate the resources for themselves.
